It is easily understood that in today’s digital age, you have to beat or out-perform your competitors if you want to stay in business, whatever your niche may be.

Social media marketing has been identified as the best tool for businesses, why?
Because the various social media platforms provides the best channels for business owners – big and small to promote and expand their businesses.
As a result, brands are taking advantage of the amazing opportunities that Social media offers.

Business owners are spending millions of dollars on social media to promote their brands and businesses, thus, creating an avenue to communicate directly with potential customers.

According to Statista, one of the leading statistics companies on the internet, social media spending in the US alone it is expected to increase to $17.34 billion in 2019.

According to Mark Sweney’s article on The Guardian, social media ad spending will grow 40% – about £1.3bn between 2018 and 2020 from £3.29bn to £4.59bn.

It also shows that by 2020, social media ad spending will overtake traditional TV ad by about £500m – £4.59bn compared to £4.04bn.
Obviously, big brands and big businesses are the primary spenders on social media, which enables them to stand out.
So, how can newer and small businesses keep up the fight and stand out, or stay ahead of the competition on social media?

They need to prepare and have a terrific plan. They must have an effective strategy that will help them outperform their competitors and stand out on social media.
Jack Welch said;

“if you don’t have a competitive advantage, don’t compete.” – Jack Welch

Is Jack right about that? Yes! If you have no plan or strategy to beat the competition, you need not be in the business.

I totally agree to that because if you have no plan to complete in the game, you certainly will be out of business before you even know it.

Here are some strategies you can implement that will help you stay ahead of the competition on social media.

Steal from your competitors

Do a research on your competitors to figure out what they are doing differently.

  • What kinds of content are they creating?
  • How are they engaging with customers on social media?
  • How effective is their customer service?
  • Why are potential customers choosing to do business with your competitors instead of with you?

The list goes on and on.
However, if you are able to study your competitors and learn what they are doing behind the scene on social media, you will be at a greater advantage over them because the information you gathered will enable you to make the necessary adjustments and improve your social media strategy.
This will help stand out and put you ahead of them on social media.

Further, while analyzing what they’re doing behind the scene to stay ahead of the competition, you also need to learn about their shortcomings – things they did wrong, the mistakes they made.
Look for a loophole, and feel in the gap. This information will help you avoid their mistakes, enhance your strategies and stand out on social media.

If someone put his effort to write a fantastic content and don’t know how it gonna reach the perfect user, who shows their value towards the content and get some benefits then no use of it. Social media is the best platform to interact with peoples you have to show your work to the right peoples and the rest your work done by social media and your visitors do. Users or who visit your blog always search a content which will give some benefit to them if the content engages your user means you utilize the customer service. Being accessible too is really important today as people do not want to wait for answers. They want them NOW.
Be there ready to answer. Either by having notifications turned on or have someone else helping you to manage your social media.

  3. Hi Moss,

Such a great read! The two most important tips for me here were Analyzing your competition and listening to your customers/audience. These two are the best way to get ahead on social media.

You can actually analyze how your competitor does the same thing and understand what the strengths and weaknesses of their approaches are. Then, you devise a strategy and make some tests.

I’d like to point out that different social platform will need different approaches based on the audience that uses them as well as the intended use of each platform. Each is unique and should be used appropriately.

    Thanks for sharing this piece!

    1. Hi Stefan,
I agree with you that analyzing your competitors and listening to your target audience is a great way to stand out on social media. Your competitors are doing everything possible to maintain their status and stand out from the crowd, so styling them will put you in a better position because you will be able to see areas where they are lacking behind and take advantage of it.

Your audience on the other hand will provide you with information that’ll help you create content that resonates with them.

Thank you for contributing to the conversation.

  4. Having your brand voice in place Moss helps you stand out from the crowd. I do my best not to be like the sheep I see here all over the place in New Zealand LOL. May be fun to see chilling in the fields but on social media, if you follow the herd you are doomed. Be genuine. Be helpful. Be present. Be you. Allow that genuine nature to bleed through all you do.

    Ryan

    1. Hi Ryan,

Yes, establishing your brand voice will definitely help you stand out on social media. As I mentioned in my comments on your site, you are a typical example of a brand voice. You have successfully developed your voice so much so that it is easily recognized across channels.

Fir example, while reading a post on Enstine’s blog yesterday, just after reading 3 lines, I said to myself, “this article was written by Ryan Biddulph. So I scrolled down to check on the author and I was right.
That’s the essence of a brand voice.

Thank you for coming by and commenting.

Great tips especially since there are already so many people trying to stand out on social media. It’s getting harder and harder to get seen.

Just like Lisa, I think the best way to stand out is to just keep sharing other people’s content.

Over time they will start helping you spread the word about your business. That’s what I seem to do and works best for me.

Great tips and I have no doubt that they will help people make the most of their social media efforts.

    Have a great day 🙂

    Susan

  6. Hi Moss,
What a great article you have written! Each and every point is necessary to stand out. These days it is more and more difficult to do so.
I think it is so important to give the best content you can give, engage with your readers, but most of all engage with your clients and/or email list.
These are the folks that have opted in for one thing or another. We have to give them preference.
When it comes to social media, it is a great way to reach those who are influencers. As long as we are honestly interested in them, it shows.
Last but not least, customer service is so important. We want to build the reputation of our brand that we support others.
