What are the Most Profitable Freelance Writing Niches?

What if I told you that there are freelance writing niches that are more profitable than others, would you believe me?

Perhaps, you would…

But the truth is that there are more profitable freelance writing niches than you can imagine–meaning that there are many better paying writing gigs in the freelance marketplace.

That is why you often read or hear seasoned freelance writers telling you to find your freelance writing niche, and narrow down your writing niche.

Why is that important to your freelance writing career?

Because clients love to hire freelance writers who specialize in a particular niche market over a general-all-weather freelance writer.
But you may ask…

What makes a freelance gig profitable?

The basic reason that makes a niche profitable is the supply and demand for that very niche.

For example, if the demand for search engine optimization (SEO) freelance writers are high, logically then, it means that niche is profitable.

Even as I used SEO writing as an example, the truth is that the need for freelance SEO writers is higher because every marketer and web owner want to appear on search engine result page (SERP) one.

You can’t possibly get there without good SEO. So, as you can see, it is a profitable niche.

Another reason a niche is profitable is the amount paid to freelance writers per article or the compensation they receive for their work.

Depending on the terms you agree on, which could be per word or per project, your compensation plan determines the profitability of the niche.

As I said earlier, using SEO as a niche example, all freelance writing projects are not the same, and compensation varies as such.

So then…

What are the most profitable freelance writing jobs?

There are many high-paying freelance writing gigs in the marketplace, all you have to do is find them. But I’ve made it easier for you with this amazing list of … better-paying freelance writing jobs.

Hence, here’s the list of freelance work that pays writers well.

1• Book ghostwriting

This one comes top for me because it is more a lucrative writing job–the highest paying freelance writing work than all the other writing gigs. Why?

Because as the name or title suggests, the writer is not getting the credit for a book, it rather goes to the client who will input his byline as the author and not the freelance writer.

As a result, they pay well for each project. In fact, the price for each ghostwriter book comes at $30,000 ~$35,000.

It’s a great compensation and not a bad idea because the book you wrote has the feel and message of your client and not your own.

They collaborate with you to make sure your content aligns with their voice.

2• White-papers

Businesses are looking for white paper freelance writers because it is more sophisticated than other content types.

The white paper content marketing offers users a solution to their problems in ways that will persuade and move them to action.

It is a lucrative writing gig because it basically identifies company problems, and then figure out and compare solutions to find the best one that solves the issue.

White papers are not your typically long-form content of about 2,000 words. These are content that ranges from about 5~12 pages.

This means that you’ll have to put in a great amount of time and effort into your writing because you’ll need to conduct an extensive interview with your client to draw out the information you need for your project.

That way, you’ll be able to create a powerful sale tool for your client. Payment varies and starts from around $3,000 per project.

3• Long-form content

Have you ever considered long-form blog posts a lucrative freelance writing gig? They are because they’re usually ultimate guideposts that range from 2000+ words.

Not every marketer has the time to consistently write these types of blog content, that is why they regularly outsource the services of freelance writers to fill the void, and they pay amazingly well.

You can use LinkedIn to get many such writing jobs in the B2B niches.

*Important* Long-form content is not about word stuffing to raise your word count, you need to know:

  • How to create compelling copy
  • How to format your articles
  • How to make your content conversational
  • Etc.

Please, read this article to understand what a long-form blog post is, why it matters, and how to write it.

4• Case studies

Typically, case studies are a collection of success stories from people in your industry and used mainly in the marketing circle to attract and gain new clients.

This area of freelance writing is so profitable in itself because a case study content can easily convince prospects to buy your product or services.

Most case study articles are gathered through interviews with experts in your niche who have collaborated with you on a project or projects, and from clients you’ve worked with, including existing clients.

It is easy to write and structure, in that it provides the:

  • Challenges your clients faced.
  • Solutions you provided that helped them out.
  • Results they achieved.

The conclusion of your a case study will help prospects to draw or make positive buying decisions.

Therefore, a case study actually shows your ability, the value of the services you can bring to the table, and how you can help your clients and prospects make similar successes.

Consequently, case study freelance writers are in demand and pays well per project. Why?

Because all companies and businesses, small, medium, big, and larger companies are constantly looking for ways to outperform their competitors, but they do not know how to write compelling case study articles.

That’s where a case study article comes in handy. So if you can craft remarkable case study pieces, that is the niche you should go for.

Hey Moss,
Good to be here bro and thanks for this helpful content. I know a couple of freelance writers that are doing well.

Though this is a tough niche as you have to be constantly looking for writing gigs, I know it’s one of the ways to make money online.

Hope you are set for a wonderful weekend coming ahead

    Moss Clement · November 15, 2018 at 4:40 pm

    Hi Enstine,

Nice to see around. Yes, freelance writing is a way to make money online, but as you said, you have to keep looking out for potential clients because you can’t make do with just a few clients. The good part is that once you’re established and known in the industry, you don’t go searching for clients, they come to you.

Thanks for coming by and contributing to the discussion.

Amanda Ricks · November 16, 2018 at 1:08 am

As always Moss, a very thorough list of high paying freelancing work.
I have one to add, from my own experience, writing for professionals, like doctors, veterinarians etc who want to offer a blog on their website. It is extremely helpful to have some sort of background in the area but if you do it can be very lucrative.
Have a good day. 🙂

    Moss Clement · November 16, 2018 at 9:08 am

You’re right, Amanda. Medical health writers are in high demand as well. Doctors are always busy with work and have less time for content creation, which is why they’re paying freelance writers to write in their niche. You don’t need to be a health professional to land this kind of gig.

Thanks for adding to the discussion!

Ryan K Biddulph · November 16, 2018 at 6:26 am

All rock big time Moss. I was an eBook ghostwriting guy once. What a fun time. I did articles for my client who posted ’em on his blog, then converted each post into an eBook. Became a best seller too.

    Moss Clement · November 17, 2018 at 12:08 am

Oh! That’s a memorable experience, Ryan. Helping someone with quality content, then repurpose the content to another format (ebook) and become a best seller is phenomenal. The demand for ebook writers are great. I’m actually looking at creating my first ebook. Thanks for adding to the discussion!

Bikram Kalsi · November 16, 2018 at 12:24 pm

Hey Moss Awesome article.
I think when it comes to freelance writing, you need to pick a niche and industry and perfect your skills to become the best.
You are more likely to get more work when you become an expert in an area.

Very resourceful article.

    Moss Clement · November 17, 2018 at 12:01 am

That why it’s important to niche or narrow down your target market and not being a freelance writer on a broad market. I agree with you, Bikram, it will also help you land better paying clients because clients love to hire writers who have a specialty.

    Thanks for contributing!

Hazel Joy · May 6, 2019 at 10:48 am

This is very insightful, Moss. SEO and finance niches are profitable because they help people either make money or save money. My most popular blog post this year concerns tips on how to afford to travel. Money makes money!

    Moss Clement · May 7, 2019 at 4:50 pm

That’s right, Hazel. You got to spend money to make money. I’m so happy that you like the article and finds it helpful. Thank you for contributing to the conversation. I will have a look at your site content.
